Yesterday I peeled an orange and couldn’t wait to delve into the juicy fruit. The fresh citrus that sprang from the rind reminded me of how my mother used to make our home smell like freshly baked sugar cookies, but funny I never saw any around the house.

My mother used to take fresh orange peel, a few cinnamon sticks and drop them into a pot of water, she’d put it on the stove and bring it to a boil and then put it on simmer for a few hours careful to check the level of the water ever so often.

I did this yesterday and today, there is nothing like walking into a room smelling of cookies! I highly recommend this for the upcoming holidays.

St. Francis a new restaurant by Chef Aaron Chamberlin, opened just a few weeks ago. I had the pleasure of attending with a few friends for happy hour. Located on the south side of Camelback just West of 7th St, it’s name was selected based on the surrounding St. Francis neighborhood as well as the chef’s history in San Francisco – a direct translation to St. Francis.

As you enter from the parking lot, the place looks like it is going to be very modern inside with a white translucent fence surrounding the outside patio. But as you enter through a glass door into a wide open space of concrete flooring and walls of original exposed brick and understated lighting – the ambiance of this place is exactly what Phoenix needed, a warm, comforting, yet modern place to just hang out with a fresh perspective and unpretentious atmosphere.

“His desire is to create a restaurant that feels like a home away from home and a community gathering spot. The dress is casual, and he will be serving seasonal American food that is simple, honest and at a good value. It will be comprised of roasted meats and fish from the wood burning oven, sandwiches, salads and healthy vegetarian offerings.”

They have got one of the best happy hours going with delightful little bites of fresh basil and cheese brick oven pizza, $3 draft beers and $5 mixed drinks including Grey Goose. Even better, get a carafe of wine for $10 – chef’s selection.

We had ordered the baked goat cheese with walnut herb pesto and toasted bread for $8 as an appetizer. This was absolutely delicious and fed the three of us. I can’t wait to go back to try some main menu items.

A friend sent this to me. It’s been said that God first separated the salt water from the fresh, made dry land, planted a garden, made animals and fish… all before making a human. He made and provided what we’d need before we were born. These are best & more powerful when eaten raw. We’re such slow learners…

A sliced Carrot looks like the human eye. The pupil, iris and radiating lines look just like the human eye… and YES, science now shows carrots greatly enhance blood flow to and function of the eyes.

A Tomato has four chambers and is red. The heart has four chambers and is red. All of the research shows tomatoes are loaded with lycopine and are indeed pure heart and blood food.

Grapes hang in a cluster that has the shape of the heart.. Each grape looks like a blood cell and all of the research today shows grapes are also profound heart and blood vitalizing food.

A Walnut looks like a little brain, a left and right hemisphere, upper cerebrums and lower cerebellums. Even the wrinkles or folds on the nut are just like the neo-cortex. We now know walnuts help develop more than three (3) dozen neuron-transmitters for brain function.

Kidney Beans actually heal and help maintain kidney function and yes, they look exactly like the human kidneys.

Celery, Bok Choy, Rhubarb and many more look just like bones. These foods specifically target bone strength. Bones are 23% sodium and these foods are 23% sodium. If you don’t have enough sodium in your diet, the body pulls it from the bones, thus making them weak. These foods replenish the skeletal needs of the body.

Avocados, Eggplant and Pears target the health and function of the womb and cervix of the female – they look just like these organs. Today’s research shows that when a woman eats one avocado a week, it balances hormones, sheds unwanted birth weight, and prevents cervical cancers. And how profound is this? It takes exactly nine (9) mont hs to grow an avocado from blossom to ripened fruit. There are over 14,000 photolytic chemical constituents of nutrition in each one of these foods (modern science has only studied and named about 141 of them).

Figs are full of seeds and hang in twos when they grow. Figs increase the mobility of male sperm and increase the numbers of Sperm as well to overcome male sterility.

Sweet Potatoes look like the pancreas and actually balance the glycemic index of diabetics.

Olives assist the health and function of the ovaries.

Oranges, Grapefruits, and other Citrus fruits look just like the mammary glands of the female and actually assist the health of the breasts and the movement of lymph in and out of the breasts.

Onions look like the body’s cells. Today’s research shows onions help clear waste materials from all of the body cells. They even produce tears which wash the epithelial layers of the eyes. A working companion, Garlic, also helps eliminate waste materials and dangerous free radicals from the body.

Totally not sure if this is fact, but it is certainly interesting. I love honey and cinnamon. I do know that honey is a great substitute for sugar and saves you on the waistline.

Facts on Honey and Cinnamon:
It is found that a mixture of honey and cinnamon cures most diseases. Honey is produced in most of the countries of the world. Scientists of today also accept honey as a ‘Ram Ban’ (very effective) medicine or all kinds of diseases. Honey can be used without any side effects for any kind of diseases.

Today’s science says that even though honey is sweet, if taken in the right dosage as a medicine, it does not harm diabetic patients. Weekly World News, a magazine in Canada , in its issue dated 17 January,1995 has given the following list of diseases that can be cured by honey and cinnamon as researched by western scientists:

HEART DISEASES:
Make a paste of honey and cinnamon powder, apply on bread, instead of jelly and jam, and eat it regularly for breakfast. It reduces the cholesterol in the arteries and saves the patient from heart attack. Also those who have already had an attack, if they do this process daily, they are kept miles away from the next attack. Regular use of the above process relieves loss of breath and strengthens the heart beat. In America & nbsp;and Canada , various nursing homes have treated patients successfully and have found that as you age, the arteries and veins lose their flexibility and get clogged;honey and cinnamon revitalize the arteries and veins.

ARTHRITIS:
Arthritis patients may take daily, morning, and night, one cup of hot water with two spoons of honey and one small teaspoon of cinnamon powder. If taken regularly even chronic arthritis can be cured. In a recent research conducted at Copenhagen University, it was found that when the doctors treated their patients with a mixture of one tablespoon of honey and half teaspoon of cinnamon powder before breakfast, they found that within a week, out of the 200 people so treated, practically 73 patients were totally relieved of pain, and within a mo nth, mostly all the patients who could not walk or move around because of arthritis started walking without pain.

As mentioned for arthritic patients, if taken three times a day, any chronic cholesterol is cured. According to information received in the said Journal, pure honey taken with food daily relieves complaints of cholesterol.

COLDS:

Another email that has been sitting in my inbox for a year. I’m making the disclaimer now that I cannot vouch for whether either the butter post or this one are true, but they certainly make sense.

HEART Attacks and Drinking Warm Water or room temperature red wine after meals

The Chinese and Japanese drink hot tea with their meals, not cold water, maybe it is time we adopt their drinking habit while eating.

For those who like to drink cold water, this article is applicable to you. It is nice to have a cold drink after a meal. However, the cold water will solidify the oily stuff that you have just consumed. It will slow down the digestion. Once this ‘sludge’ reacts with the acid, it will break down and be absorbed by the intestine faster than the solid food. It will line the intestine. Very soon, this will turn into fats and lead to cancer. It is best to drink room temperature red wine, hot soup or warm water after a meal.

Common Symptoms Of Heart Attacks…
A serious note about heart attacks – You should know that not every heart attack symptom is going to be the left arm hurting. Be aware of intense pain in the jaw line.

You may never have the first chest pain during the course of a heart attack. Nausea and intense sweating are also common symptoms. 60% of people who have a heart attack while they are asleep do not wake up. Pain in the jaw can wake you from a sound sleep. Let’s be careful and be aware. The more we know, the better chance we could survive.

Butter is Better.

I have had this email in my inbox for an entire year, so I am finally posting it because it is super interesting. I hope you find it to be as interesting and entertaining as I did.

Margarine was originally manufactured to fatten turkeys. When it killed the turkeys, the people who had put all the money into the research wanted a payback so they put their heads together to figure out what to do with this product to get their money back. It was a white substance with no food appeal so they added the yellow coloring and sold it to people to use in place of butter. How do you like it? They have come out with some clever new flavorings.

The difference between margarine and butter.
- Both have the same amount of calories.
- Butter is slightly higher in saturated fats at 8 grams compared to 5 grams.
- Eating margarine can increase heart disease in women by 53% over eating the same amount of butter, accor ding to a recent Harvard Medical Study
- Eating butter increases the absorption of many other nutrients i n other foods.
- Butter has many nutritional benefits where margarine has a few only because they are added!
- Butter tastes much better than margarine and it can enhance the flavors of other foods.
- Butter has been around for centuries where margarine has been around for less than 100 years .

Margarine…
- Very high in trans fatty acids.
- Triple risk of coronary heart disease . Increases total cholesterol and LDL (this is the bad cholesterol) and lowers HDL cholesterol (t he good cholesterol).
- Increases the risk of cancers up to five fold.
- Lowers quality of breast milk.
- Decreases immune response.
- Decreases insulin response.
- Margarine is but ONE MOLECULE away from being PLASTIC!! (one word – hydrogenated)

Margarine experiment:
Purchase a tub of margarine and leave it in your garage or shaded area. Within a couple of days you will note a couple of things:
* no flies, not even those pesky fruit flies will go near it (that should tell you something)
* it does not rot or smell differently because it has no nutritional value; nothing will grow on it. Even those teeny weenie microorganisms will not a find a home to grow. Why? Because it is nearly plastic .. Would you melt your Tupperware and spread that on your toast?
